Job Description

Records Manager – Emerson College The Records Manager oversees the College-wide records management program for all campuses, ensuring the effective organization, storage, protection, and disposition of both physical and digital records. The manager designs, delivers, and records in-person and online training programs for Department Records Officers (DROs) and the broader Emerson community. The role involves working regularly with highly sensitive and confidential information, requiring discretion and attention to detail. Essential Job Duties Collaborate with approximately 90 offices and departments to manage the creation, storage, and disposition of over 20,000 records annually in a fast-paced environment. Develop and deliver training and outreach programs for DROs and the Emerson community across campus locations, including live and recorded sessions, targeted email communications, and educational materials. Serve as the sole point of contact for providing expert guidance and support to college departments on records‑management best practices, procedures, policies, and projects, including onsite visits. Work with the Assistant Director for Archives & Special Collections and the Digital Archivist to develop and implement records‑management procedures for digital and physical records. Maintain and manage records from various campuses stored or destroyed through a third‑party vendor, coordinating destruction and assisting departments. Maintain up‑to‑date program documentation such as DRO lists, off‑site storage databases, and statistics; collaborate with leadership to ensure alignment with requirements. Comply with all applicable laws and policies, proactively promoting knowledge and compliance across all campuses. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications ALA‑Accredited Master’s degree in library and/or information science or a related field with coursework in records management, or two years of professional records‑management experience may substitute. Minimum three years of professional records‑management experience beyond education, including interpreting policies and retention schedules, completing time‑sensitive projects, ensuring compliance, and providing guidance and training. Experience managing vendor relationships, coordinating orders, troubleshooting, collaborating with vendor representatives, and maintaining databases and websites. Certified Records Manager credential preferred. Degree or demonstrated experience in law or a related field preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Effective written and verbal communication with all staff levels, strong questioning and listening skills. Expert knowledge of records‑management theory, standards, laws, and technologies. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment, including planning and implementing complex programs. Physical Abilities Regularly lift and move heavy boxes and objects. Frequent travel around the Boston campus and occasional travel to California and the Netherlands. Long periods of mental and visual concentration. Work Environment Primary workstation located in an open office space with no windows. Compensation: $52,000.00 – $62,450.00 annually, commensurate with experience.
